Use your day today to work through the skills presented in this article, and remember that with each interaction, remind yourself that everyone is important. This doesn’t mean that their challenge or issue makes it to the top of your priority list, but that it will get addressed in some way, even if it is a general acknowledgment and a plan to follow up.

1.       Don’t get mired in the mud.  Stay on task, but as you go through your day, remember the larger vision.

2.       Don’t give in to the drama.  The rough edges of all the situations you are faced with can be tempered by a moment of reconsideration.  Try this today.  Step into the space between stimulus and response to ensure that your contribution adds calm to the situation.

3.       Remember that you are just one player; although it seems hard to believe when you are in the heat of the moment, this is not about you.  You are just playing a conduit for the organization’s accomplishments.

Finally, when you feel afraid of the outcome or intimidated by a situation, remember to be courageous.  As a middle manager, others look to you to bring calm to the situation.
