The first question is, "What are my special
gifts?" or, "What am I good at?" What do you do best? What are
your talents and skills? Make a list. Even if you think they aren't unique or
special, just jot down what comes to your mind first.
The second question is, "What do I love doing?" Make a second list.
What puts a smile on your face and gives you a sense of satisfaction? Do you
love helping people? Do you love being creative? Do you love solving problems
or fixing things? It's okay if some of the same things are on both lists.
That's the main idea, actually. You're looking for both what you're good at and
what you love doing.
The third question is more complex and perhaps more difficult to answer at
first. It is, "What does the world need?" We can all agree that the
world needs many things, so this question can seem quite intimidating. A
simpler way to ask this question is, "What difference can I
make?" What difference do I want to make? What can I do in my
corner of the world - my career - right now?
Once you've made your three lists, circle key words and underline duplicates.
Then fill in the blanks below:
- I am great at ________________________
- I love ________________________
- The difference I want to make is ________________________
Often our keys are right in front of us, but we don't see them because we're looking for something more complicated. Take a few minutes and think about how you see yourself at work. See whether you can find an old perspective or two that you can leave behind as the new you emerges.
And what could you do tomorrow to get closer to your goals?
