Making Decisions: Action Steps

We’re all forced to make decisions every day. Some people are willing to make quick decisions, knowing that they may need to reevaluate quickly and explore alternatives while others like to consider every option before committing to a choice. Both are valid models, with time being a factor that always needs to remain a consideration.

What are the top three items on your desk today that require a decision?

1.

2.

3.

Are these items overdue (with or without an actual deadline)?

For each decision that needs to be made write down the 2 most pressing resources you need in order to make the decision (money, approval, input, information, etc.):

Issue One Needs:

1.

2.

Issue Two Needs

Issue Three Needs

2.

Commit to getting the resources you need today. Make a phone call or write an email to anyone who needs to be involved. Once you have received any needed information check to see if either you, or the other involved party, is operating with blinders on. Find another employee with limited exposure to the issue to play “Devil’s Advocate” if necessary – make a determination and clear your desk… now isn’t that better?
