Be the Problem

Description

Give the most troubling tasks of a job a personal identification. Make yourself part of analogy and look at the trouble tasks from the inside out. This will give you a greater understanding of what the root cause is of the discomfort associated with the task, it can also help lead to visualize possibilities that would not otherwise be recognized in a situation.

 Objectives

• To visualize a problem to encourage greater understanding

• To generate possible solutions to a problem

Outcomes from this experience will point the way to understanding the nature and extent of the tasks so that it can be better defined. Experiences can also point toward the activity providing the stimulus to creative solutions for complex problems.

 1. Identify the area of concern in as much detail as possible.

 2. Imagine yourself in the position of actually becoming the task. Take one or two minutes and immerse yourself with this, give the problem a personal identification by closing your eyes and imagine the feel, the smell, the sounds, the taste, the view (as appropriate for the problem) from the inside.

 3. Record any important insights. Perhaps involve others and get their opinion as well. Be sure to stay within the role and do not revert back to being an outside observer. Finally, imagine how you might solve the problem from your current perspective.

 4. When the analogy has been developed as fully as possible, use these insights to better describe the problem or to identify possible solutions for further analysis.
